Social protection committee proposes increase in old age, disability and widow’s pensions in Chandigarh: The Tribune India
Chandigarh, February 3
The welfare committee of the Chandigarh Administrator’s Advisory Board recommended that the UT administration consider building a Majdoor Bhawan and another retirement home in the city.
The meeting was held at UT Guest House under the chairmanship of Satya Pal Jain, former Member of Parliament and Additional Solicitor General of India. The committee recommended that the UT administration increase the old age, disability and widow’s pension from Rs1000 to Rs2000 per month and to take up this issue with the Union government for giving its approval to proposal.
Jain, who chaired the meeting, said the committee discussed many welfare issues and felt there was a need for an additional retirement home in Chandigarh.
The committee felt that given the large number of workers, there was an urgent need for a Majdoor Bhawan in Chandigarh where workers could perform their duties at lower rates, he added.
The committee discussed the increase in the number of beggars in Chandigarh, he said. The panel asked officials to conduct a survey to assess their numbers, especially children, and move them to relief shelters so the city can be beggar-free in the near future, he added. – TNS
